Center for Sustainable
Tourism
The Center for Sustainable Tourism supports both applied and academic research that furthers responsible economic, environmental and socio-cultural development and management of tourism. Tourism’s footprint is large, contributing to both positive and negative outcomes; it is also an industry which at times is fragile, impacted in many ways by its surroundings. Research supported by the Center follows major initiatives.
Tourism Research
The Hospitality & Tourism Research Center provides innovative research of value to industry, community, and policy-makers. Our focus is to develop a profitable and sustainable industry, which provides tangible benefits for business, residents, and visitors. We have conducted a range of research projects around the world.
Our projects and programs range from funded industry research through academic research. To provide assistance for tourism and hospitality organizations/destinations to be prepared when challenged with catastrophic events.
To identify best planning practices for extraordinary events that might disrupt normal business operations.
To provide training for tourism and hospitality organizations/destinations to become prepared for catastrophic events.
Research Areas
Tourism crisis management planning for local, state, and national agencies
Visitor attitudes and behaviors associated with tourism crisis
Best practices for crisis planning, preparedness, response, and recovery issues
Best practices in tourism crisis communication
Crisis reduction, readiness, response and recovery efforts from natural-and human-induced disasters
Impacts of crisis events on visitors, industry personnel, destination image, and economic well-being of communities
Ecotourism & Sustainable Travel Research Center
Ecotourism
Ecotourism is becoming a major sector in the Travel Industry experiencing an ever increasing rate of growth. It is the nature and culture based tourism that is ecologically sustainable and supports the well being of local communities. Ecotourism involves providing people with holidays or leisure activities in natural areas (e.g. mountains, forest and sea).
Rapid growth in Ecotourism also means rapid growth in job opportunities, managing ecotourism facilities or planning and conducting ecotour activities.
Ecology & Sustainable Tourism
Ecotourism is defined as purposeful travel to natural areas to understand the culture and natural history of the environment, taking care not to alter the integrity of the ecosystem while producing economic opportunities that make the conservation of natural resources beneficial to local people.
Ecotourism is about uniting conservation, communities, and sustainable travel. This means that those who implement and participate in ecotourism activities should adhere to the following ecotourism principles:
Minimize impact.
Build environmental and cultural awareness and respect.
Provide positive experiences for both visitors and hosts.
Provide direct financial benefits for conservation.
Provide financial benefits and empowerment for local people.
Raise sensitivity to host countries' political, environmental, and social climate.
Research Areas
The ecotourism is focused on market segmentation, ecological impacts of wildlife viewing, and community-based ecotourism, but there has been minimal attention to critical areas such as quality control, the industry, external environments or institutions even as the components and parameters of ecotourism are being extended. This imbalance, combined with the fragmentation and lack of integration within the literature, suggest that ecotourism, as a field of academic inquiry, is still in a state of adolescence.
The ecotourism research involves the following areas:
Ecotourism and heritage tourism participation and demand
Attitudes and behaviors among visitors and residents
Stakeholder use and development of community based ecotourism and heritage tourism
Parks and protected areas management
Socio-cultural, environmental, and economic impacts of ecotourism and heritage tourism
Ecotourism and heritage tourism planning for sustainable communities
Community involvement in natural and cultural resource planning and management
Planning and management of World Heritage Sites
Local, national, and international policy context for ecotourism and heritage tourism development
Global Wine Tourism Research Center
Global wine tourism - research, management and marketing
Wine regions are attracting increasing numbers of tourists through tours, wine festivals and winery, restaurant and cellar door experiences. Presenting applied research in wine tourism from Europe, North America, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand this book reviews the latest management and marketing strategies. It highlights the lessons learnt for wine and tourism industries and concludes by examining the future of the wine tourism industry.
Wine Blind Tasting
A blind wine tasting is a great way to bring some excitement and fun to your next wine tasting party. It is a wine tasting theme which can be educational, enlightening, surprising, humbling and even hilarious.
A blind tasting is a wine tasting arranged so that the people assessing the wines do not know what the wines are until after they taste them! If you are the host, you can either have planned the wines and know them, or you can ask guests to bring wines blinded so that you are in on the fun as well. You would be surprised by how much many of our experience and judgement of wines is influenced by the knowledge of the producer, region, price or even the appearance of the label. A blind wine tasting takes that all away so that you can objectively assess the quality of a wine without these biases coming into play. There are also many games or challenges that a blind wine tasting can offer which makes this wine tasting theme even more fun.
Wine Tourism Research
Research on wine tourism has expanded rapidly since the early 1990s with approximately two thirds of the literature coming from Australia and New Zealand, countries with not only substantial wine tourism but also a long record of wine marketing research. Of the remaining literature the dominant source countries for research are Canada and the USA.
The research of Wine Tourism are focused in the following areas:
- wine tourism product and its development
- wine tourism and regional development
- the size of the winery visitation market;
- winery visitor segments
- the behavior of the winery visitor
- the nature of the visitor experience
- the biosecurity risks posed by visitors.
Methods are still relatively crude and studies still tend to be regionally focused and quite generic in nature. There is therefore a need not only to improve the means by which results from different locations and populations can be compared but also to employ greater sophistication in the employment of qualitative and quantitative techniques in their examination.
Coastal Tourism Research Center
Coastal Tourism Research
The Coastal Tourism Research Center provides tourism businesses and destination communities with innovative solutions and strategic guidance to overcome the complex challenges associated with implementing sustainable tourism in the coastal zone. Coastal and marine tourism is the fastest growing sector of the global tourism industry with its central attributes of sand, sea and sun. In order to create safe, stable and attractive coastal environments with clean waters and healthy coastal habitats. It is necessary to develop well-managed sustainable coastal tourism. Integrated Coastal Zone Management is the best available approach for achieving this aim. . In a world that is rapidly changing, the Coastal Tourism Research Center provides clients with achievable solutions that advance sustainable tourism in the coastal zone and at sea for generations to come.
There’s plenty of research out there, but how much of it actually makes a difference? Our research program is business focused, designed to bridge gaps between theory and practice to deliver real world solutions for coastal tourism. Whether making sense of existing research findings, or undertaking new research to help businesses make better informed decisions, we believe insight should always be accessible and actionable.
Coastal Tourism
Research Areas
There are three strands to our research activity, focused initially on:
Monitoring the health of the visitor economy to measure growth over time
Identifying strengths and weaknesses in the visitor economy to support business and destination performance
Action research, an innovative approach to addressing business or destination challenges, involving consultation and intervention to enable measurable change.
School of Innovation and Crisis Management
School of Innovation and Crisis Management
About the School
The School of Innovation and Crisis Management prepares students to lead the development and successful introduction of high-tech solutions in business, industry, and the classroom. Faculty members are experts in helping organizations improve, and their research reflects the latest in helpful solutions. From teaching tomorrow’s teachers to understanding the nuances in each technological challenge, the school focuses on improving and shaping the future of technology and its uses.
The School is a research unit focused on the study of innovation management in organizations. Innovation management is defined as the activities, processes, routines, systems that foster knowledge creation, transformation, dissemination, and sharing as it moves organization towards change and adaptation in their pursuit of value creation and competitiveness. Entrepreneurship is intrinsic to this concept of innovation.
The School of Innovation and Crisis Management prepares students for fulfilling and productive careers in the fields of Innovation Management, Crisis Management, Leadership & Crisis Management, Disaster Management, Economic Crisis, Political Management, Tourism Crisis Management, Technology and more.
Innovation Management
Sustaining competitiveness in the global marketplace demands incorporation of ongoing innovation within existing business strategies and processes.
In today’s economy, creativity might be the most valuable commodity of all. Companies need ingenious solutions to reach customers in a marketplace getting more crowded day by day.
By studying markets, innovation and design, you will make envisioning a better world a habit, and you will transform ideas in your head into finished images, products and services that shape our culture. Recognize what consumers want – even before they know they want it – and how to satisfy those desires. Our focus on innovation is one reason some of the leading companies and organizations in the world actively recruit our graduates.
The markets, innovation and design program exposes students to the orchestration, design, logic and strategy underlying organizations' key marketing practices. The program highlights the complex interplay between market research and strategic brand management. Exploring a range of creative, analytical and technical processes, students generate ideas and transform those ideas into images, products and services. Applying quantitative and qualitative techniques for identifying consumers' needs, they gain experience turning design ideas into reality.
Crisis Management
Crisis Management is the process by which an organization deals with major unpredictable events that threatens to harm the organization, its stakeholders, or the general public. Three elements are common to most definitions of crisis:
(1) a threat to the organization, (2) the element of surprise, and (3) a short decision time. Many business owners and managers feel that crisis types are limited to natural disasters not realizing that there are other categories of crisis that can affect their organization. In this crisis management course you will be required to apply your crisis management knowledge and skill in the development of a Crisis Management Plan and Media Strategy for a real world organization.
Innovating for the Future
Preparing for the next economy is a challenge that all progressive business leaders must face. The innovation management focuses on the skills and knowledge needed to lead the process of innovation in all types of businesses. It gives the students the perspective necessary to compete successfully through technology and innovation. Students learn how to apply theories, frameworks and methods assessing the innovative capacity of an organization and how to develop strategies for exploring the opportunities discovered. The active technology communities have a great need for leaders who know how to manage and foster the process of innovation. Innovation management creates an intersection of leadership, strategy and technology. Its practitioners are invaluable for businesses seeking to shepherd innovation and creativity. Students may work or seek to work in technology-related industries or for businesses that market innovative products and services.
Innovation Management during Economic Crisis
Economic downturns are the least desirable but still inevitable conditions, which bring along many negative consequences on the living standard of citizens and business survival, development, further growth, and profitability.
In such circumstances of economic crises, managers turn to the so-called quick reactive strategies aimed at retaining previous profit levels, in an attempt to protect their business from the downfall - thus securing its survival. However, it is determined that in a time of economic crisis, innovation management in most cases suffers the most. It becomes a neglected field of management, left for better economic conditions. Nevertheless, the question is whether managers in periods of economic downturns should neglect investing in innovations and how they should approach the innovation management field. Strategic implications of innovation management in the time of economic crisis are presented and taught by the School of Innovation and Crisis Management. In the first instance the usual managers’ behavior related to conducting business in times of economic crisis is described. Furthemore proposals are given with regard to whether and how managers should implement innovation management strategies, in order to set up a strong base and precondition for future business growth, after the crisis is over, but also during the crisis itself.
